Jewelry was never just jewelry.
When I was young, I never fully understood why the elders in our family cared so deeply about jewelry.
To me, they were beautiful pieces — gold rings, necklaces, something worn on the hand or around the neck. But I did not yet understand why they were kept so carefully, why they were spoken about with such emotion, and why they seemed to carry a meaning beyond their value.
Until the day my grandfather left us.
At the hospital, he took the gold ring he had always worn and personally passed it to the person he loved the most. His necklace was left for his children.
In that moment, I finally understood.
Jewelry can be a meaning. A chapter of life. A memory. A form of protection. A family’s story. A quiet way for love to continue staying beside the people we care about.
My grandmother would also pass down some of the jewelry she often wore. Whenever those pieces came to us, we kept them carefully — not because they were only accessories, but because one day, they would become time that could never be bought again.
They are proof that someone we love once lived, once loved us, and in a quiet way, still stays with us.
We do not only make pieces that look beautiful for a few years.
